Abstract
The main objective of this research was to improve VIII-E students‟ reading comprehension in SMP Negeri 7 Cilacap through mind mapping technique. The researcher were curious whether mind mapping technique could improve students reading comprehension in VIII-E of SMP Negeri 7 Cilacap. The participants of this research were 32 students. This action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The technique of data collection applied test, observation, questionnaire, field note and interview. The result of the research showed that mind mapping technique can improve the students‟ reading comprehension. The pre-test score increased from 62.03 to 70.41 in post-test I, then 76.91in post-test II. The number of the students that reached the passing grade was increasing from 18.75% in pre-test, to 62.50% in post-test I, and 90.63% in post-test II. It had reached the criterion of action success which was more than 85% students in VIII-E could reach the passing grade of 70. The observation result showed that the mean of students activeness increased from 45.79% in cycle I to 82.25 % in cycle II. The mean percentage of questionnaire was 96.94%. It meant that 96.94% students agreed that mind mapping technique could improve student reading comprehension. Those results proved that mind mapping technique can improve students‟ reading comprehension. It was hoped that this result could give teacher inspiration to implement mind mapping technique in the class.
