Abstract

This research was rationalized by the information gathered from an interview
with one of the Mathematics teachers in Junior High School (SMP) 2 Patikraja
which revealed that the mathematical communication ability, especially
performed by grade VII A students, was still low. This information was validated
by the average pretest score of the students' mathematical communication ability
on & lsquo;Square' material which showed 1.85 of 5. It was categorized as low.
This research was aimed at improving the mathematical communication ability of
students of SMP Negeri 2 Patikraja through the discovery learning method with
geoboard. The subject of the research was a class of grade VII A students of SMP
Negeri 2 Patikraja in the academic year 2017/2018. This was a Classroom Action
Research which consisted of three cycles with two meetings in each. The stages of
this research covered research planning, treatment, observation, evaluation, and
reflection. The data were collected through observations and tests of the
mathematical communication ability. The results showed that the students'
mathematical communication ability in cycle I was averaged 53.52, in cycle II
was averaged 67.94, and in the cycle III was averaged 77.50. It could be
concluded that discovery learning method geoboard could improve
themathematical communication ability of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 2
Patikraja, especially in Square' material. This conclusion was shown by the
improvement of the average of the test score of the mathematical communication
ability performed by the students in each cycle.
