Abstract
The use of Calcium Oxide as a heterogenic base catalyst is one of the alternatives to create biodiesel from used cooking oil through an alcoholic process (transesterification). This research was aimed at investigating the effect of catalyst amount (1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3%) at the reaction time (30, 60, 90, 120, 150 minutes) on the ester methyl yield produced, and at determining the biodiesel characteristics produced from the transesterification process. This research used once-used cooking oil. The highest yield was 71.598%. It was gotten during the reaction process with the amount of catalyst as much as 2.5% at 150 minutes. The comparison between methanol and oil was 15:1 with the reaction temperature of 60oC. The result of the analysis using ANOVA was that the p-value was less than 0.05. It meant that the comparison of the catalyst amount and the reaction time affected the yield (% of mass) produced. The characteristics of the biodiesel produced from the transesterification of used cooking oil using the heterogenic catalyst of CaO had achieved the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) which covered the Total Acid Number, Density, Kinematic Viscosity @ 40oC, Distillation, Cetane Number, Flash Point, Pour Point, Cu Strip Corrosion 3 hrs/100oC.
