Abstract

African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is a freshwater fish commodity that is widely cultivated intensively using high density. However, this cultivation makes the water quality decline so that it can inhibit their growth. In order to maintain good growth and endurance of fish, growth support and immunostimulatory materials are needed. One natural ingredient that can be used is turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val). This study aims to find out the effect of turmeric powder and optimal doses in increasing growth and non-specific immunity in African catfish. The study was conducted in August-September 2019, at the Zoology Laboratory and the Wet Laboratory of the UMP Biofloc Pool. The design of the experiment uses RAL. The treatment is done by adding the turmeric powder into the feed with 4 different doses of P0 as a control, P1 (0.5 g / kg), P2 (1 g / kg) and P3 (1.5 g / kg), with 4 replications every treatment. The parameters observed include growth and immune parameters. Growth parameters include length increase, weight gain, SGR, FCR and feed efficiency, while immune parameters are the percentage of hematocrit and differential leukocytes of lymphocytes and monocytes. Supporting parameters such as water quality include temperature, pH and DO. The data obtained were analyzed using ANOVA with a confidence level of 95%, if there were significant differences followed by further DMRT tests. Water quality data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results showed that the addition of turmeric powder in the feed significantly affected (P <0.05) the length, weight gain, SGR, FCR and feed efficiency, as well as the percentage of hematocrit and differential leukocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes. This shows the addition of turmeric powder into the feed is good to be used as a growth promoter and immunostimulant in the cultivation of African catfish.
