Abstract

Cancer is the one of the leading causes of death in the world. The one of cancer
treatment is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). Photodynamic therapy is a cancer
therapy using photosensitizers which are injected into the body then illuminated
with light at certain wavelengths so as to produce singlet oxygen which can kill
cancer cells by necrosis. Photodynamic therapy is more promising than other
cancer therapies because of its selectivity to cancer cells. One of the
photosensitizer compound used in photodynamic therapy is phthalocyanine. The
type of this research is a nonexperimental method. The result of the partition
coefficient value of phthalocyanine is 5.70 indicating that phthalocyanine have
high lipophilicity so that they easily penetrate cell membranes. The results of the
molar absorptivity (ε) of phthalocyanine were 1416 cm-1 M-1 in the Q1 band 693
nm so that phthalocyanine could be used in small doses. From the results of
measuring singlet oxygen quantum values (ΦΔ) phthalocyanine have a value of ΦΔ
greater at pH 7,4 (ΦΔ= 0,28) compared to pH 6,3 (ΦΔ= 0,26) so that it has the
potential for photodynamic therapy. From the results of the measurement of the
quantum yield fluorescence (ΦF) phthalocyanine has a ΦF value 0.0214 so that it
has the potential for cancer photodiagnostics. From the results of the stability test
on indirect sunlight the phthalocyanine is not stable against sunlight as evidenced
by an absorption decrease of 8.47%.
