Abstract
African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is a freshwater fish commodity commonly growth by improving intensive cultivation technique. However, intensive cultivation techniques produce a risk of a decrease in water quality. It affects a slow growth and reduces fish resistance so it is susceptible to disease. One of the ways to overcome these problems is by giving growth promoters and immune stimulants which aim to increase growth and endurance. One of the plants which works as growth promoter and immune stimulant is Aloe Vera. The study aimed to determine the effect of Aloe Vera powder on growth and endurance. This study was conducted at the Zoological Laboratory and biofloc experimental laboratory in UMP from August to September 2019. The design implemented a completely randomized design (CRD). The treatment was conducted by Aloe Vera powder administration into the feed with a dose of P1 20 g/kg of feed, P2 30 g/kg of feed, P3 40 g/kg of feed and control (P0), with 4 repetitions. The main parameters observed were weight and length growth, SGR, FCR, EF, and differential leukocytes and hematocrit levels. Supporting parameters observed were water quality which covered dissolved oxygen, temperature, and pH. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and continued by DMRT test. Water quality data were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated that Aloe Vera powder on the feed significantly (P <0.05) affected the growth of weight and length, SGR, FCR, EF, and differential lymphocyte leukocytes, and hematocrit levels, but the monocytes were not significantly different (P> 0.05). The optimal dose to increase growth and non-specific immune response was P3 dose (40g/kg of feed). In conclusion, the administration of Aloe Vera powder in feed potentially contributes as a growth promoter and immune stimulant in the growth of African catfish.
