Abstract

The study was aimed at describing the mathematical literacy skills of students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto viewed from learning autonomy. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The subjects were the students of class VIII D. They were selected by using a purposive sampling technique. They were grouped into 3 groups, namely the group of high learning autonomy, the group of medium learning autonomy, and the group of low learning autonomy. The data were collected by using independent learning questionnaires, math literacy skills tests, interviews, and documentation. The results indicated that the students with high learning autonomy tended to be able to formulate problems, used mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning, and were able to interpret, apply, and evaluate the results obtained. The students with medium learning autonomy were able to formulate problems and to use mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning to the problems given. The students with low learning autonomy tended not to meet the indicators of mathematical literacy skills.
