Abstract

Batik industry produces liquid waste with inorganic content such as hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) which is dangerous to the environment and needs to be controlled. One of the liquid waste controlling methods that are commonly used is bioremediation method by utilizing local potential like Staphylococcus sp. bacteria and water lettuce plants(Pistia stratiotes). This research aimed to find out the potential of Staphylococcus sp. bacteria and P. stratiotes as the bioremediator to reduce hexavalent chromium content (Cr6+) in liquid waste of batik. This experimental research used Completely Randomized Factorial Design (CRFD) with three test factors including the weight of P. stratiotes (W) (0%, 50%, and100%), the concentration of Staphylococcus sp.bacteria(C) (0%, 10%, and20%),and the duration of contact (D) (0 and 6 days) so there were 18 treatments in this research. The data were then analyzed using F test and continued with Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) on a 95% level of trust. The results showed that Staphylococcus sp.bacteria and P. stratiotes plants could reduce the Cr6+ content with the best treatment on the combination of of W0C1D2 and W1C0D2 with the reduction percentage of 100% from 0.21 ppm to 0 ppm. The conclusion from this research is that Staphylococcus sp.and water lettuce has the potential as bioremediator of Cr6+ in liquid waste of batik.
