Abstract

The high demand for batik cloth encourages batik producers to use synthetic
(chemical) dyes. Synthetic dyes are still widely used in the batik industry. It
causes water pollution by batik industrial wastewater because liquid waste
contains dangerous heavy metals, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). One of the
solutions to overcome this problem is the application of bioremediation
techniques by Bacillus sp. and water hyacinth (E. crassipes). The study aimed to
determine the effect of Bacillus sp. and water hyacinth (E. crassipes) in reducing
Cr6+ in batik wastewater. This research was an experimental study with a factorial
completely randomized design (CRD); the percentage of water hyacinth plant
weight (0%, 50%, and 100%), the concentration of Bacillus sp. (0%, 10%, and
20%), and the duration of 0 days, and 6 days. The data were analyzed statistically
by F test and continued by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the level of
confidence 95%. The results showed that the treatment of B1K0, B1K1, B1K2,
B2K0, B2K1, B2K2 could significantly reduce Cr6+ levels from a value of 0.2100
ppm to 0 ppm. It can be drawn that the treatment of Bacillus sp. and water
hyacinth plants (E. crassipes) which were the most effective in reducing
hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) levels in batik wastewater were in the treatment with
codes of B1K0, B1K1, B1K2, B2K0, B2K1, B2K2.
