Abstract

The study was aimed at (1) explaining the background behind the opening of the railroad track in Banyumas regency, 2) explaining the development of the railroad system in Banyumas regency in 1895-1917, 3) explaining the impact of opening a railroad track in Banyumas regency in 1895-1917. The historical research method wasused in this study. It included four stages, namely heuristics (the process of gathering resources), criticism (atesting process that considers the historical factors of a text), interpretation (a process of breaking down anduniting data that had been collected and passed through a process of criticism), and historiography (writing orpresentation of historical events). The history of the railroad in Banyumas regency could not be separated fromthe political role in Banyumas regency. Transportation problems faced by plantations and factories became veryserious problems that must be overcome. The railroad transportation facilities had become indispensable facilitiesfor the transportation of goods. The development of the railroad system in Banyumas regency in 1895-1917, wasthe construction and operation of a local short-distance train route which was known as a tram. This trambelonged to the private company of Serajoedal Stroomtram Maatschappij (SDS) with a 99-year concession. Thecompany built and operated trains connecting Maos, Purwokerto, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, to Wonosobo. The railroad in the Banyumas Residency in 1895-1917 had an impact on the community, businessmen and government. The impact on comunity is to facilitate the mobility of the population, become a crowd point for buying and selling, and facilitating the transportation of goods needed by the community. The impact for businessmen is that it facilitates the production of plantations and mills, SDS gets a profit from every kilometer, and the needs of entrepreneurs are met. The impact for the government is to solve transportation problems in the Banyumas Residency, get the benefit of using the tram at any time when needed, and fulfilling needs becomes smooth.
