Abstract
The batik industry generally uses naphthol synthetic dye and produces liquid waste containing heavy metals in the form of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) which is toxic and dangerous to the environment. One of the environmentally friendly methods of handling batik waste is the bioremediation technique by utilizing the potential of B. subtilis and S. natans plants in reducing heavy metals in the environment. This study aimed to examine the potential of B. subtilis and S. natans plants and the best treatment of both as bioremediation in reducing Cr6+ levels in the batik industrial liquid waste in Sokaraja. This research was conducted using a completely randomized design factorial (RALF) with three factors, namely the concentration of B. subtilis (K) bacteria, the area of S. natans plant cover (B), and duration of contact (L). The parameters observed were Cr6+ levels in 18 treatments and the data obtained were analyzed using the F test and continued with the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 95% confidence level. The results of this study showed that the treatment of S. natans plants at 50% and 100% coverage area and B. subtilis at concentrations of 10% and 20% for 6 days were able to significantly reduce Cr6+ levels in batik liquid waste (100%). In the combination treatment, only B1K1 (50% of plant cover area and 10% bacterial concentration) and B2K2 (100% plant area and 20% bacterial concentration) were able to reduce up to 100%. In conclusion, B. subtilis and S. natans plants potentially reduce Cr6+ levels in batik liquid waste with the best treatment, namely the B0K1, B0K2, B1K0, B1K1, B2K0, and B2K2 treatments with a percentage reduction in Cr6+ levels reaching 100%.
