This research was aimed at knowing the students’competence in writing
descriptive text. This research used descriptive method with 36 students at
seven grade of Mts Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in academic year 2019/2020
as the total populations. There were 36 students who were chosen as the
sample. Written test was given to the samples in the form of creating
descriptive paragraph about family or class mate. The students’ writing was
analyzed based on the aspects of writing, such as content, organization,
vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. The result of this research showed that
there were 1 student or (3%) belonged to bad category, 28 students or (78%)
belonged to good category and 7 students or (19%) were in very good
category. The students’ writing competence belonged to good category, with
the mean score of. The students had a problem in mechanics aspect.
