Abstract

The number of deaths caused by cancer continues to grow. However, cancer
therapies that are generally carried out include surgery, radiotherapy, and
chemotherapy, still have shortcomings. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer
therapy that is currently being developed. PDT is a therapy by combining
components in the form of photosensitizer, light, and oxygen, which are only
localized to cancer cells. The used compound is a model of the photosensitizer
derivative of metallated phthalocyanine compound which has a macrocyclic
tetrapyrrole structure, namely Manganese(II) Phthalocyanine (Mn(II)Pc). This
study aims to determine the physicochemical characteristics of the Mn(II)Pc
compound which determine its potential in PDT. The research method carried out
in the form of non-experimental. The absorption prediction result of the value of
log P = 4,85 indicate the compound Mn(II)Pc is lipophilic. The measurement
100 cm-1 M-1 indicate that the
compound Mn(II)Pc can be used in low concentrations for cancer therapy in
deeper tissues. The Mn(II)Pc compound can produce singlet oxygen quantum
yields ( ) at pH 6,3 and 7,4 with a value of 0,14. The result of quantum
F) is 0,01. Based on, the stability test for indirect sunlight
showed that the compound Mn(II)Pc underwent photodegradation for 3,5 hours of
measurement. It can be concluded that the compound Mn(II)Pc has the potential
to be used in PDT, but not has potential for photodiagnostic.
