Abstract

This research attempts to show the students' perception on their teachers use of English in the classroom. This research was conducted in the Senior High School 1 Sokaraja, Central Java, involving by 6 classes that consist from 183 students from different grade. This research used questionnaire and interview as the data collection. The questionnaire result were tabulated into percentage then interpreted to explore the students' perception, and the response from the interview were transcribed, and interpreted to clarify the finding from questionnaire. The result are shown that the student felt that their teachers are used English when they teach English subject in the classroom then the teachers were translated the English into Indonesian language or some of them are use Javanese as an additional language to make the student easier to understand what the teachers said about the new material that the teacher explained, meanwhile the students also has good perception in their opinion toward their classroom situation with 65.25% students are agreed about that. The other indicator also shown the student positive perception on their teacher with mostly 96.99% students are felt enjoy with their teacher explanation in the classroom. Meanwhile, the data from the questionnaire showed that most of students' responses were in agreement with their answer in the interview that are 80.32% students assumed that they get good impact by their English teachers use of English in the classroom. Using English actively by the teachers would be a problem in senior high school 1 Sokaraja, causing the students confused about what their teacher said, and confused about understanding the material. Therefore, the teachers should consider about language they use to deliver material to their students to make the students understand about what they want to teach. Hopefully, the findings of the research could be a good help for English teachers in Senior High School 1 Sokaraja in making decision what language they should use during teaching-learning process in the classroom.
