Abstract

This research was conducted to find the level of students’ anxiety in speaking English and to find out the factors that cause students’ anxiety in speaking English in second semester students at English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. This research was a survey research that used quantitative and qualitative methods in analyzing the data. The data were taken using two instruments, namely questionnaire and interview. In this research, the researcher used population sampling from class A and B. The result of this research indicated that the level of students’ anxiety in speaking English was high. It was known that the score obtained by all students to measure their English-speaking anxiety level was 65.21%. The results were also supported by interview with 4 students which were used to strengthen the data from the questionnaire. There were several factors found that influenced students’ anxiety in speaking English; fear, worry, over self predicition toward, irrational faith, over sensitivity toward threat, sensitivity of anxiety, wrong attribution body signal, and low self-efficacy in speaking English.
