Abstract

The Violations of Law in John
Grisham’s novel Rogue Lawyer. Undergraduate thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree,
English Literature, Faculty of Letters, Muhammadiyah University Purwokerto.
This research aimed to point out and discuss the acts of violations of law in the
USA that were depicted within the novel Rogue Lawyer by using differential
association theory and differential social organisation theory by Edwin
Shuterland. Through the research, certain acts that can be considered as
violations of law were found, both by an individual or by peers, and factors that
can cause people to commit certain acts of violations towards the law.
This research used a descriptive qualitative method, which is a combination of
observations, interviews, and document reviews. This method also concerns
more on the process than the result. This method was applied in collecting
evidences within the novel Rogue Lawyer to answer the research questions from
characters, conversations, settings in the novel Rogue Lawyer.
The result of this research showed the acts of crimes or violations of law both in
this novel and the reality are strongly related to the process and factors within
differential association. Since people will push as far as their environment
allowed them to. Researches showed that violations of law give impact to the
society and the victims. The impact can be long term, permanent and harmful.
The environment where an individual grow up plays a significant role in shaping a
person’s character and life choices.
