Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine concentration of betele leaf extract and pulsing duration in pulsing solution, the right interaction to extend the vase life of the cut roses. This study was conducted from April to May 2018 at the Basic Agro technology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with 2 factors, the first factor with 5 levels of solution concentration, namely distilled water as a control solution, 25ppm AgNO3 and betle leaf extract of 200 grams, 300 grams, 400 grams added by 100 grams of sugar and 0.15 grams of citric acid. The second factor was the pulsing duration; 12 and 24 hours, which were repeated 4 times. The results showed that the concentration of the solution had a significant effect on the vase life of the cut rose, so that the duration of pulsing did not significantly affect the vase life. In the interaction, concentration and pulsing duration of solution had a significant effect on the vase life of cut roses. Cut rose flower soaked in 300 grams betel leaf extract, 100 grams of sugar and 0.15 grams of citric acid showed good results with the absorption of pulsing solution of 22.92 ml, an initial flower diameter of 61.24 mm to achieve perfect florescence of 6 hsp then the diameter of the flower decreased to 47.03 mm when the flower withers, the color of the flower changed from red 45A turned into a dark purple red 53B when 10 hsp and turned dark purple brown 59A when the flower had withered, the flower vase life reached 13 days, longer 5 days compared to distilled water using as a control and only 1 day longer than using 25ppm AgNO3, 100 grams of sugar and 0.15 grams of citric acid with the vase life of 14 days. From the results of this study, it was known that betele leaf extract was able to replace the role of AgNO3 in a soaking solution (pulsing) as a natural bactericide that was easy to find and safe to use for the environment.
