Abstract
This research is talking about The School Literacy Movement (GLS). The School Literacy Movement (GLS) is an overall effort to make the school a learning organization which the school residents are lifelong literates through public engagement. This study aims to: (1) find out the implementation of GLS in the fostered schools, (2) find out the obstacles faced by the fostered schools in implementing GLS, and (3) find out how the fostered schools overcome the existing obstacles. The fostered schools studied were SMP Negeri 1 Sigaluh, SMP Negeri 4 Banjarnegara, SMP Negeri 1 Wanadadi, and SMP Negeri 1 Purwanegara. Data collection techniques are done by questionnaire, interview, observation, and study of documents. Data analysis is performed by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The things investigated are the implementation of GLS in 4 fostered schools at the habituation stage, the development stage, and the learning stage. The activities carried out also include observing the involvement of school residents (school principals, education staff, teachers, and students) in GLS, the obstacles encountered, and how to overcome them. The result is that 3 schools have implemented GLS and 1 school has not implemented it. Common obstacles faced are lack of students’ interest in reading, lack of interesting reading books of students’ interest, and adequate infrastructure. Fostered schools overcome these obstacles by assisting students of reading activities, adding to book collections by buying or working with library or book publishers, and completing or improving available facilities. Researcher suggests the school administrators to learn more about GLS and implement it well because reading will bring out creative people.
