Abstract

The aim of this study were 1) to find out students’ problems that they faced in learning writing and 2) to investigate the students’ strategies for solving those problems. The study was conducted in English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in academic year 2018/2019. The research method used was the descriptive qualitative research method. The samples of subject were 18 students in the fourth semester of English Education Department. They were selected using a simple random sampling procedure by lottery. The data of this research was collected through semi structure interview. The findings revealed that those students had various experiences of writing problems that they faced in learning writing. The problems were: 1) Linguistics: grammatical, sentence structure and word choices; 2) Cognitive: punctuation, capitalization, spelling, content and organization; 3) Psychological: planning, drafting, editing and final version. However, the students had their own strategies in solving those problems. They were memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective and social strategy, but the common strategy that the students used was social. The students had a good social interaction and corporation with others in solving their problems of writing. For example, the students would ask to their friends or lecturer if their faced a problem in doing writing.
