Abstract
A defective activity is an activity which is considered to have imperfect function of an activity related to the goal of the activity. In reading comprehension class, defective activity is not suitable in building students’ comprehension skill. The aim of this research is to find out the defective activities that the lecturer implemented in reading comprehension class and the responses that the students felt in the reading comprehension classes. Descriptive quantitative using survey was used as a method of this research. To get the information about defective activity in reading comprehension class, 76 respondents from the fourth semester English Education Department students of University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto were surveyed by using questionnaire consisting of 20 statements. The result from the questionnaire showed that defective activities were still implemented in reading comprehension classes. In detail, unrelated comprehension activities showed the highest precentage 88.9%. The second is translating the passage come (85.5%), followed by reading aloud (68.7%) and structure development (63.9%). The lowest precentage is focused more on generic structure gaining 62.9%. Then, the students respond that they were agree that their lecturer implemented those kinds of defective activities in reading comprehension class.
