Abstract

This research was conducted at Junior High School of Kalibagor. This research aimed to investigate error correcting techniques used by the teachers, students’ and teachers’ preference of error correcting techniques used by the teachers, and teachers’ difficulties in providing correction or feedback. this research is descriptive quantitative with the population were Kalibagor Junior High School English teachers and the students. For the data collection, classroom observation sheet and questionnaires were used. Classroom observation sheet was used to find out the error correcting techniques used by the teachers both in speaking and writing. Questionnaires sheet were used to find out the teachers’ and students’ preferences of the error correcting techniques used by the teachers both in speaking and writing. The result showed that in speaking class the teachers preferred to give correction using recast and repetition. For the writing class, the teachers also used the six techniques with most of teachers preferred to give written error correction using underlining and teachers also preferred to give written error correction using giving code as a symbol. It were supported by the students that most of them preferred to get oral correction using recast and repetition in speaking class and also students preferred to get written error correction by giving code as a symbol. However the teachers still faced difficulties in correcting students error because some of students didn’t read and understand the correction and feedback so the teachers need a lot of time in providing the correction and feedback.
