Abstract

Used vehicle oil is a hazardous and toxic waste that is a result of the use of motorized vehicles. The waste from lubricating oil usually contains a lot of Fe. Bentonite has a layered structure with the ability to swell (swelling) and have cations that can be exchanged. The surface of bentonite is negatively charged, so it can adsorb positively charged metal ions but its ability to adsorb is low. These weaknesses can be overcome through a chemical activation process using acids and physics by heating. The purpose of this study is to study the effect of variables chosen on decreasing Fe content after adsorption with active bentonite (1.5 M H2SO4). Variables varied were concentrations of bentonite (15-gram and 30 grams in 150 ml of used lubricant), contact time (45 minutes and 90 minutes), and stirring speed (100 rpm and 200 rpm). Based on the research design, the number of experimental units in the study were 8 experimental units with 2 Fe content analysis. This study began with the activation process of the adsorbent (bentonite), the adsorption process, the separation of adsorbents, and Fe analysis on used lubricants after adsorption with used lubricant bentonite tested Fe content. Lubricant testing is carried out based on standards issued by the American Standard for Testing Materials (ASTM D5185) with an ICP or Inductive Couple Plasma device.
