Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the elements that should be mastered in language. It is not easy to mastering but not mean it is impossible to learn. Students need a long time to practice it, not only practice with a teacher but also, they have to practice independently. Autonomous learning is a way that can be conditioned by the teacher towards their students and vice versa students can also choose this way of learning autonomously because students can adjust to the time, location, place, and stages of autonomous learning. This research was aimed to find out whether or not there is the difference between student autonomous learning and student non-autonomous learning increased their pronunciation and to investigate whether there is a significant influence of students autonomous learning toward increased their pronunciation or not. This study was a quantitative study and used survey ex-post facto design. The population was six-semester students of the English Department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Then for the sample, the researcher took as much as 30 students by random sampling technique. The data was collected through questionnaires and tests. For the data analysis, the researcher used a t-test to know the differences between the variables whether it is valuable or no. The result of the study showed that there was a difference between students who had high autonomous learning and students who had low autonomous learning. It can be seen in the average of each group. The average of students who had high autonomous learning was 56,45 while the average of students who had low autonomous learning was 68,85. After getting t-test computation, the researcher tried to compare it with t-table. The t-test result was -4.17 and t-table in the level of significance 0.05 in df 18 was 1.73. So, t-test result < t-table. It meant autonomous learning not influence student pronunciation.
