Abstract

This research aimed to describe mathematical communication skills observed from reflective and impulsive cognitive styles of students in grade VIII at State Junior High School 1 Padamara. The type of the research was descriptive qualitative. The subject used in this research was students of VIII C class at State Junior High School 1 Padamara periode of 2018/2019. The techniques of collecting data were test, interview, and documentation. The tests used were written mathematical communication skills test and Matching Familiar Figure Test (MFFT) to categorize students into reflective and impulsive cognitive styles. The technique of collecting subject used was purposive sampling according to the results of MFFT. The research subjects contain of 3 students with reflective cognitive style and 3 students with impulsive cognitive style. The results of this research showed that students with reflective cognitive style had expressed mathematical ideas or situation into mathematics language (symbol), image or mathematics model as well as explained and written the strategies, problem solving steps correctly and in detail, meanwhile students with impulsive cognitive style in general had not expressed any mathematical ideas or situation into mathematics language (symbol) and mathematical model yet, however they could expressed ideas or situation in form of image. Students with impulsive cognitive style had used the correct problem solving strategy although had not written the solving steps compeletely yet and there were still mistakes in the solving given.
