Abstract

The aims of this research are: First, to know the average motivation of Senior High School student who join English Course in Purwokerto. Second, to investigate the dominant factors of students’ motivation in attending English Course. This study involved Senior High School Students who join English Course in Purwokerto. The total population is 150 students. By using purposive sampling, 105 students were chosen as the sample. Closed-questionnaire and opened-questionnaire were used to collect the data. The questionnaire was distributed to the subject, to collect data. The subject filling the questionnaire regarding the two types of motivation i.e., integrative motivation and instrumental motivation. From finding, it showed that the highest mean score was on integrative motivation that reach 4,12. The most dominant factors were on item 11 (connecting with foreigner), 27 (joining with community easily), 2 (speak English fluently), 5 (improving English skills), 9 (being better in English), 1 (English is needed in the future career), 6 (By learning English, it helps people to get an ideal job in the future), and 7 (Learning English makes someone being more knowledgeable person). While the less dominant factor was on item 12 (The desire to be like by teacher was not their motivation in joining English Course.
