Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of lower leaf defoliation, types of manure, and
their interaction on thegrowth and yield of sweet corn (Zea Mays L. Saccharata). The
research was carried out at the ExperimentalGarden of the Faculty of Agriculture and
Fisheries, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto from April to June2021. The study
utilized a Split Plot Design, with the Main Plot was defoliation, consisting of zero
defoliation (P0),3 bottom leaves defoliation (P1), 4 bottom leaves defoliation (P2). The
subplot is types of manure, consisting ofcow manure (R1), goat manure (R2), chicken
manure (R3). The results revealed that (1) lower leaf defoliationsignificantly affected
growth such as the number of leaves and leaf area and it contributed no significant
effect onyield components of sweet corn plants. (2) The application of chicken manure
resulted in the highest number ofleaves, weight of cob, length of cob without husks, and
weight of cob without husks of sweet corn compared tocow and goat manures,
respectively 7.44 strands, 352.51 g, 21.28cm, and 245.7g. (3) Defoliation continued
byapplication of manure significantly contributed to cob weight, length of cob without
husk, and weight of cob withouthusk of sweet corn. Defoliation of four leaves and
chicken manure resulted in the highest number of leaves, thelongest length of cob
without husks, and the heaviest weight of cob without the weight of sweet corn
compared toother interactions.
