Abstract

Background: Cork fish extract has high potential to accelerate the wound healing process because it contains high protein and albumin. The cork fish extract is formulated into a wound dressing by composition optimizing of PVA, sodium alginate, and PEG 400. In wound dressing applications, PVA is a synthetic hydrogel product that has good biocompatibility, but PVA is not elastic enough, the membrane is rigid and its hydrophilicity is limited if used singly. Therefore, a PVA crosslink was performed with sodium alginate to increase the elasticity of the wound dressing. Method: The crosslink method used was freeze-thaw with a freezing process at -20 ℃ for 18 hours and melting at 25 ℃ for 6 hours. In this research, optimization was carried out using the D-optimal design method. The optimum formula is obtained based on the desirability value which is close to 1. Results: The results showed that the optimum formula for wound dressing of cork fish extract with a composition of PVA 8.363%, 2.5% sodium alginate and 4.137% PEG 400 with a desirability value was 0.806. In the wound dressing formula, the tensile strength response was 3,390 N / mm2, the elongation at break response was 33.427%, and the young modulus was 10.101 mPa. Conclusion: Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the optimum formula obtained has the best response value, namely the formula with the composition of PVA 8.363%, 2.5% sodium alginate and PEG 400 4.137%.
