Abstract

HOTS or Higher Order Thinking Skills is complex thinking skills which covers analytical skills, problem solving, and critical and creative thinking skills. The results of preliminary study conducted in MA Negeri 2 Banyumas illustrated that the common learning model implemented by teachers was Discovery Learning (DL) model with a question and answer method, however the implementation was still teacher-centered. It stimulated to less active and less trained students in developing HOTS. HOTS is an ability which can be achieved through analyzing, evaluating and creating activities. The study aimed to define 1) the effect of the problem-based learning (PBL) model on students’ HOTS in the kingdom fungi material; 2) the differences in students’ HOTS in control class and experimental class; and 3) better learning models to stimulate students’ HOTS. The research subjects were students of tenth grade of Science class Academic Year 2018/2019 which undertook kingdom fungi material. The study design was post-test only control design. The research instrument was a written test in the form of two-tier multiple choice question. The results discovered that there was an effect of the PBL model on students' HOTS in the kingdom fungi material with the eta test correlation coefficient of 0.512, it proved that it had sufficient effect. There was a difference in students’ HOTS of the control class and experimental class based on the significant of independent t test 0,000. PBL model implemented in the experimental class was better at improving students' HOTS than the discovery learning model implemented in the control class based on the significance value of the dependent t test 0,000.
