Abstract

Language is a very important thing that people have to master. People use language to communicate with others. Language has elements. Vocabulary is one of them. Language is nothing without vocabulary. Knowing how important vocabulary is, people have to master it in order to achieve successful communication. Talking about mastering vocabulary, it is not always easy for some people especially when people learn language which they never spoke before. English is an international language which is used by many people all around the world. Mastering English demands mastering vocabulary as well which might not always be easy. There are many ways or media to learn vocabulary. Word Search Puzzle Game is one of them which can be used to make vocabulary learning process easier. Word Search Puzzle Game is a puzzle containing several hidden words on letters arranged in a grid. The researcher used this media to solve vocabulary problem in SMP Muhammadiyah Sokaraja. The subject was the students of class VII A because their vocabulary mastery was still low. The class consisted of 32 students. The research methodology used was Classroom Action Research (CAR). In collecting the data, the researcher used test, questionnaire and observation. The research objective was to improve students’ vocabulary. After collecting and analyzing the data, the data analysis shows that the students’ scores improved. The students’ mean score in the pre-test is 56.7, in the post-test 1 is 76.9, and in the post-test 2 is 83.8. From the questionnaire, it shows that the students gave positive responses about Word Search Puzzle Game which was used as a media to teach vocabulary. The observation which was done during the research shows that the students showed good attitude. The teaching and learning process lasted well. From all the data, it is known that Word Search Puzzle Game improved the students’ vocabulary at class VII A of SMP Muhammadiyah Sokaraja.
