Abstract

This study aimed to describe the types and factors causing code-switching and codemixing of Ustaz (teachers) and Santri (Students) utterances in using Bahasa in Arabic Learning. This type of research was a qualitative descriptive study. The data of this study were the utterances of Ustaz and Santri which contained code-switching and code-mixing between Indonesian, Arabic, English, and Javanese in Darussalam Islamic boarding school in Dukuhwaluh, Purwokerto. The Data of utterances of Ustaz and santri utterances totaled to 71, consisting of 41 code-switching utterances and 30 mixed code utterances. The data sources in this study were teachers and students who interact in learning Arabic in first grade Class of Madrasah Diniyah (Primary School) Darussalam Islamic Boarding School Dukuhwaluh, Purwokerto. The method of data collecting was in the form of tapping/recording method, with advanced Uninvolved Conversation Observation Technique. At the data analysis stage, the identity method and the distributional method were employed by using the determinant constituent analysis. The data presentation result employed an informal presentation method. From the results of the analysis, internal code-switching and external code-switching were found. 2) Factors causing code-switching found by the speaker, listener or interlocutor, the influence of the presence of a third person and the topic of conversation. 3) Mixed codes found were mixed codes in the form of insertion of tangible elements, insertion of tangible elements, phrase insertion of repetitive tangible elements and insertion of clausal tangible elements. 4) Factors that cause code mixing found were identification of social roles, identification of diversity, and a desire to explain and interpret.
