Abstract

This study was focused on the constraints faced by the second grade students of senior high school in reading comprehension. The purposes of the study were to find out the constraints faced by the second grade students of SMA N 5 Purwokerto and to find out the factors of constraint in reading comprehension. The method applied was descriptive quantitative and qualitative. Test and interview were used as the strategy to collect the data. The test consisted of 20 question items divided into five types. They were determining main idea, understanding vocabulary, making inference, locating reference and detail information. Index of difficulty and percentage were used to analyze the data. The result of the test showed that the majority of the second grade students of SMA N 5 Purwokerto found several constraints. The most constraint was detail information with only 23% of students who could answer the related question correctly, making inference with only 36% of students who could answer the related question correctly, determining main idea with only 42% of students who could answer the related question correctly, understanding vocabulary with only 49% of students who could answer the related question correctly and locating reference with only 77% of students who could answer the related question correctly. Based on the students’ responses in the interview, they mostly got constraints in lack of vocabulary, lack of mastery of grammar, lack of knowledge about strategy of comprehending texts, difficult to understand long sentences and texts and difficult to understand the meaning of texts. So that based on the findings the teacher should provide an interesting material to improve students reading ability. For the students, they should read more text and practice, so that they can improve their reading comprehension.
