Abstract

Water is one of the most abundant chemical compounds in the wild, however, the availability of water which qualifies for human uses is relatively limited due to various factors. Clean water is produced from filtration using a membrane that can sterilize water from impurities, colors, or odors. This study aimed to create ceramic membranes of clay and Titanium dioxide (TiO2) into hybrid membranes with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymers for ultra filtration. The resulting hybrid ceramic membrane was characterized by its density, porosity, water absorption and its ability to purify dyes. The results showed that the density of ceramic membrane with variation of TiO2 0%-5% concentration was between 1.58g/cm3-1.76g/cm3, porosity 27.27%-34.8% and water absorption 17.25%-19.74%. The result of hybrid membrane density analysis with variation of PVA 0%-10% concentration was between 1.89g/cm3-2.09g/cm3, porosity 26.73% -6.66% and water absorption 14.28%-3.19%. The morphological results of SEM showed that the density of the pore became denser and microorganism testing indicated that the filtration water with hybrid membrane could decrease the microbes of the water.
