Abstract
This study examined the understanding and perceived serioussness of different types of plagiarism among student of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in the academic year of 2017/2018. This study involving 40 students from semester eight as the samples. Questionnaire and Interview were used to collect the data. The results indicates that the students of English Education Department had inadequate understanding of different forms of plagiarism. Out of ten different types of plagiarism presented in the questionnaire and interview, only four types of plagiarism forms were recognized by the students with the precentage of understanding and perceived seriousness of each forms count for more than 50 percent. The four different types of plagiarism forms are: purloining, verbatim copying, other plagiarism and plagiarism of the form of a sources. This study highlighted the need for instructing students to the issue of plagiarism and also discussing the policies and expectations from the university to tackle the issue of plagiarism caused by lack understanding of what constitutes plagiarism.
