Abstract

Cement is one of the most widely used materials today. National cement demand is currently estimated at 72 million tons per year. In order to meet this great demand, several new breakthrough efforts need to be made, given the availability of cements raw material is limited. One of the breakthroughs that can be done is the use of alternative raw material that availability is still abundant, for example is pozzolan. Pozzolan can be added to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) to produce Pozzolan Portland Cement (PPC). Pozzolan is used as an additional feedstock in cement manufacturing because it contains reactive elements of silicates and aluminates, such as cement. In addition, the use of pozzolan can also reduce clinker factor, saving fuels, and reduce the impact of emissions generated in cement manufacturing process. The purpose of this research is to know how the effect of adding pozzolan on OPC to PPC quality either chemical or physical properties. It is also to know how the effect of OPC finesses t PPCo the chemical and physical properties of PPC. Research begins by made laboratory scale of OPC using test mill. After initial analysis on OPC, OPC is mixed with pozzolan to produce PPC with proportion of 6%, 12%, 18%, 24%, 30%, and 36% against OPC, then testing its compressive strength, chemical composition and finesses. The result showed that the addition of pozzolan will decrease the compressive strength of PPC and increase the finesses of PPC significantly. Factors that decrease the compressive strength of mortar are the reaction between alkali on cement and silica on aggregate, because pozzolan has alkali content of K2O and Na2O, which is high enough. In addition, less clinker proportions also decrease compressive strength, as fewer clinkers are using, the less minerals such as C3S and C2S react with water to form C-S-H compounds that affect compressive strength. The results of the experiment is that up to 36% pozzolan proportion shows the value that is still comply with SNI 15-0302-2004 standard on PPC terms.
