Abstract

One type of writing skills that are taught in high school / vocational school is to write short story. Writing short story can improve students' writing skills because through writing short story students can pour ideas, thoughts and imagination in systematic and organized. However, the fact that students in writing skills are lacking. The problems raised in this research is whether mind mapping method is as effective as compared to conventional methods for improving the ability to write short story in class X SMA Ma'arif Karangmoncol? The research was designed with quasi-experimental. Samples were taken from the students of class XA and XB SMA Ma'arif Karangmoncol with total sampling techniques. The research instrument using test techniques. Data analysis techniques using different test (t-test). The results of research showed that there were significant differences between the classes using mind mapping method with class that does not use mind mapping method in class X school Ma'arif Karangmoncol. This is evidenced by the different test results (t-test) greater than the value of t-table at the 99% confidence level (t test = 6.128 > t table = 2.5176). Based on these results, the hypothesis which states: "The application of mind mapping method is more effective than conventional methods in improving the ability of writing short story in class X SMA Ma'arif Karangmoncol", was accepted. The suggestions from the research are: mind mapping method should be applied more intensively in learning to write short story as well as other relevant material, students should be more careful and pay attention to spelling in learning to write, the teachers in learning to write should not impose limits on the subject to the students, so that the ideas and imagination of the students in writing to more developed.
