Abstract

This study was focused on the errors made by the second grade students of MTs Ma‟arif NU 2 Cilongok in mastering simple past tense. It was intended to find out the place of the errors and the most error made by the students in using simple past tense. Descriptive method was used to describe the general errors and the most errors of the students. The population of this research were the second grade students of MTs Ma‟arif NU 2 Cilongok. The samples were 25% 0f 212 students, which were 53 students. The technique used to collect data was test. After the data had been collected and analyzed, it was known that the errors occurred in the main indicators of simple past tense and non-indicators of simple past tense. The main indicators of simple past tense were the use of past verb and adverb of time. While non-indicators of simple past tense were subject, object and complement. In this case, it only discussed the errors of main indicators of simple tense. Error in auxiliary verb was the most significant error made by students in using simple past tense which it covered 65% errors. The result of the data analysis showed that the students incapability to use simple past tense.
