Abstract

The research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of Scaffolding in teaching writing. The population of the research was all of the students on the 2nd grade of SMP N 1 Kalimanah. The total population was 306 students. The purposive sampling was used to take the sample of the research. There were two classes as research participants. Class VIII H was the control group and class VIII I was the experimental group. The research was conducted from 1-26 April, 2014. There was treatment in the experimental group that was taught by using Scaffolding technique. On the other hand, the control group was taught without using Scaffolding technique. Both classes were given pre-test and post-test. Pre-test was given to know the early competence of the participants in the writing skill. There was post-test after the treatment was given. The result of t-test calculation was 3.842 while t-table value at the level of significance α = 0.05 for degree of freedom (df) = 65 was 1.669. It meant that t-test was higher than t-table (3.842 > 1.669). Based on the previous description, it could be concluded that Scaffolding technique was effective for teaching writing.
