Abstract

This research aimed to improve students‟ vocabulary competence. The method used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was done at the class of X9 SMA N 1 Sokaraja in academic year 2012/2013 as the subject of the research. The subject of the research was 29 students. The researcher did the collaboration with the English teacher. The researcher took two cycles with two actions in each cycle. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were collected through observation, test, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. There were two kinds of data: qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed based on the students‟ and the teacher‟s interview result, while the quantitaive data were analyzed based on the students‟ test result, students‟ observation result, and questionnare. The result of the research showed that there was significant improvement of students‟ vocabulary competence using “Snake and Ladder Game”. It could be seen from students‟ result of vocabulary test. The mean of pre-test was 40.26. The mean of post-test in cycle 1 was 69.37. The mean of post-test in cycle 2 was 76.86. The result of students‟ activities showed the average score was improved from cycle 1 (65.51%) to cycle 2 (88.21%). The data of questionnaire which was gained from the thirteen statements showed that the students gave positive response to the implementation of snake and ladder game. The average of the students‟ questionnaire that was taken “yes” was 91.24%. It could be concluded that most of the students could enjoy with the lesson and did the game happily.
