Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing whether environmental media could improve students‟ competence in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto in academic year 2013/2014. The method of this research was a classroom action research (CAR). The subject of this research was the students of VIIE of SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto which consisted of 34 students. The treatment was carried out in two cycles of four actions, from April 24th 2014 to May 12th 2014. Every cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, reflecting and evaluating. In collecting data the writer used test and observation as the quantitative data. To support the quantitative data questionnaire was conducted to evaluate the teaching learning process as the qualitative data. The result of this research could be seen from the result of students‟ score who reached KKM (80) in pre-test and action two of cycle two. The number of students‟ writing score who reached KKM in pre-test showed 17.64% became 54% in action two of cycle one (post-test 1). It became 90.62% in action two of cycle two (post-test 2). It reached the criteria of action success which was at least 85% of the number students who reached KKM (80). Then it was supported by observation and questionnaire result. The observation result improved 30.28% from cycle one to cycle two. The questionnaire result showed that almost all of students (91.01%) felt more enjoyed, easy and helped being able to write descriptive text using environmental media. Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that environmental media could improve students‟ competence in writing descriptive text.
