Abstract

This research was aimed at improving students’ speaking skills using replicas. The implementation of replica in teaching speaking was conducted through a CAR. It was conducted for a month in October 2012. The CAR was done based on Kemmis and Mc.Taggart model design. The writer took two cycles with six actions (three actions each cycle). Based on the observation, the writer found three problems: (1) many students assumed that speaking was a difficult and scary thing, (2) some students had problems with their fluency, (3) some students had problem with their accuracy. The data were collected through observation, test, interview and questionnaire. There were two kinds of data that were collected, quantitative and qualitative. In analysing qualitative data the writer used four stages; collecting data, reducing data, presenting data and making conclusion. The quantitative data were counted by using mean and score standard. It was to measure whether there was an improvement in CAR or not. From the data analysis, it was found that the students’ speaking skills improved after the teacher taught speaking using replicas. It could be seen from the pre-test result (5.59), and post-test one (7.27). It increased 2.32 and the result of post-test cycle two was 7.93. There was an improvement 0.66 point from post-test in cycle one. The use of replicas also improved the students’ motivation and activities in learning English. The students were more interested in learning English, working in group discussion and doing assignment and most of students actively involved in the activities.
