Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing (1) how far the students’ mastery of vocabulary in second grade of SMP N 1 Patikraja (2) what errors made by the students in mastering vocabulary based on reading context. The method used in this research was descriptive study. The subject of the research of this research was the students at second grade of SMP N 1 Patikraja in academic year 2014/2015. In analyzing the error, the steps were taken collecting data, identifying or classifying error and categorize error. The population of this research was all students in second grade which consisted of 214 students. 30% of the population or 70 students were taken as the sample. The sample was chosen randomly. The data was taken through multiple choices test. There were 20 questions of multiple choices. The result of analyzing the data could be concluded in the following; firstly, the students’ vocabulary mastery in SMP N 1 Patikraja at grade VIII belonged to category enough, as the mean score of students was 63.14. In details; four students (5.71%) belonged to very good category, students who achieved enough category were 30 students (42.85%), fair category reached 48.57% (34 students), and two students got bad with the percentage 2.85%. The errors made by the students showed three levels of category. There were high, medium and low. The items number 12, 13, 14 and 20 belonged to high level of error. Item number 12 had percentage 75.71%. Item number 13 was 87.14% for the percentage. Item number 14 had 70% for the percentage of errors and the last item number 18 with 87.14%.
