Abstract

This study aimed at knowing whether Words to Sentences game is effective for teaching writing descriptive text at Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sokaraja in the academic year of 2014/2015. It employed a quasi-experimental research, and the design was pre-test-post-test control group design. The sampling technique applied was random sampling technique. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sokaraja. The samples of this research were the students of class VII B as the experimental class consisting of thirty-three students and class VII E as the control class consisting of thirty-two students. The technique of data collection used test, namely pre-test and post-test. The result of assessment showed that the mean score of pre-test in experimental class was 56.6 and the mean score of post-test was 71.9. Meanwhile, the mean score of control class was 55.9 and the mean score of post-test was 66.6. There was an improvement from pre-test to post-test as many as 15.3 in the experimental class. The progression in the control class was 10.7 from pre-test to post-test. The data was calculated by using statistical formula. Based on the data analysis, t-test was higher than t-table or 3.658 1.6694, so that the hypothesis was accepted. It proves that Words to Sentences game gave positive effect for teaching writing descriptive text.
