Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the effect of using contextual approach to the 9 graders’ interest and ability in writing a short in SMP Purnama Sumpiuh. This research used quantitative approach with quasi exprerimental research method by using Pretest-Posttest Control Group Desain. The population of this research was all of student in class 9A, 9B, 9C SMP Purnama Sumpiuh with 60 student. Whereas, the sample of wxperimental group was class 9A containing 20 student, and the sample of control group was class 9C containing 20 student. The research instrument used were questionanaire and test. The questionanaire was designed in the from ofattitude scale which was used to know the student’ interest in writing a short story. While the test was contructed with 5 essay or subjective questions to measure the students’ ability in writing a short story (knowledge and skill). The result of descriptive analysis showed that contextual approach give positive effect. Students became more interested in writing a short story after they were taught by using contextual approach. This could be proven through the score of t-counted (6,016) > t-table (1,671). Descriptive analysis result showed that using contextual approach gave positive effect on writing a short story. Students were able to know their writing weaknesses, because they have been taught new knowledge through contextual approach by the researcher. Therefore, students were able to complete the formal aspects of a short story (title, author, dialog, narration): able to complete the intrinsic elements of a short story (plot, characters, setting, point of view, theme development); able to combine the structure of a short story (language structure, stability of writing, language varieties). Student were more active and creative in writing a short story based on their own experiences as well as others’ experiences. The result of quanritative descriptive showed that the score (t-counted=8,231) > t-table = 1,671.
