Abstract

The aim of this research was to know the effectiveness of flash cards in vocabulary teaching to grade eight of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto in Academic year 2013/2014. This research used the experimental method in which the population was all of the eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto in academic year 2013/2014. The samples were class VIII-B (experimental class) and class VIII-E (control class). This research was conducted in January 2014. The writer used tests as an instrument in collecting the data. The test was given in the beginning and the last of the meeting. The kind of the test was multiple choice. This test was to know students’ vocabulary mastery. After analyzing the data, it was found that there was positive effect of teaching vocabulary using flash cards at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto. It could be seen by the result of t-test computation, 5,597 and t-table of significant 5% using one tail was 1,672. So, the t-test result was higher than the value of t-table. According to the data analysis, it was found that using flash cards was effective to teach vocabulary.
