Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of PORPE (Predict, Organize, Rehearse, Practice and Evaluate) method to teach reading comprehension. This research was conducted at one of Senior High Schools in Cilacap in the academic year 2013/2014. The samples of this research were XC as the experimental class which consisted of 32 students and XD as the control class which consisted of 32 students. This research used quasi experimental research which was conducted from May until June 2014. The instrument of collecting the data was tests. The test was done before and after the treatment, they were pre-test and post-test. The type of the test was multiple choices which consist of 30 items both in pre-test and post-test. t-test formula was used to analyze the data. Based on the computation, t-test result was 3.364 and t-table was 1.671 at the significant level 0.05 with the degree of freedom 62. It showed that t-result was higher than t-table (3.364 >1.671). Based on the research result, it can be concluded that the PORPE method was effective for teaching reading comprehension. The implication of this research was that PORPE gave positive effect for teaching reading, it was recommended to use PORPE as the variation learning method in the teaching learning process. In terms of pedagogy, the teacher can implement this learning method in teaching various types of text. By applying this learning method, it helped the students to comprehend text and also enhance students‟ reading components.
