Abstract

This research was aimed at improving students’ speaking ability using cooperative learning type STAD ( Student Teams Achievement Divisions ). The subject of the research was students of class XI IPS 2 in SMA N 1 Purwonegoro in academic year 2012/2013. It consisted of 27 students. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The writer worked collaboratively with the English teacher as the collaborator teacher. The researcher used Kemmis and McTaggart design: making plan, creating activity, observing, evaluating, and reflecting. There were 2 cycles, and each cycle covered 2 actions. The data were collected through observations, speaking test (pre-test and post-test), interview, field note, and documentation. The writer employed qualitative and quantitative data as a technique to analyze. The qualitative data were analyzed based on the observation result students’ activities in the class, while the quantitative data were analyzed by using speaking test. Based on data analysis result, data observation showed that the use of cooperative learning type STAD could improve the students’ speaking ability. It could be seen from the mean of pre test was 30.04, the mean of post test one was 38.74, and the mean of post test two was 48.33. It could be concluded that the improvement of mean reached 60.88%. It was also supported by observation result. The data observation showed that the average of the students’ improvement in speaking activity in cycle one at 45.67% and the cycle two at 70.97%. Then the improvement from cycle one to cycle two was 25,3%. Which meant that the students’ activeness improved after the implementation of STAD. Furthermore, must of students gave their positive responses about the implementation of STAD. It was supported by interview result also supported the students pleasure about their speaking class. In conclusion, STAD could improve students’ speaking ability and could also make the students active in the teaching learning process.
