Abstract

Na - CMC as a Gelling Agent can produce toothpaste with varying consistency. Siwak wood ( Salvadora persica ) and red betel leaf ( Piper crocatum ) are often used as active substances in toothpastes used as antibacterials in teeth. This study aims to deter mine the optimal concentration of Na - CMC as a gelling agent on toothpaste preparations of siwak wood extract and red betel leaf extract. The method in this research is an experimental research to determine optimal formula toward physical characteristics of toothpaste preparation of siwak wood extract and red betel leaf extract by adding various Na - CMC concentration for stability. Based on the results of this study, Na - CMC which serves as a gelling agent on Siwak wood extract toothpaste and optimal red betel leaf extract at a concentration of 1.5%. The result of antibacterial test of Streptococcus mutans to Siwak wood extract toothpaste and red betel leaf extract with 0,5%, 1%, 1,5%, and 2% Na - CMC concentration resulted in inhibit zone 23,186 mm, 23,27 mm, 23 ,191 mm and 23,517 mm, indicating that the variation of Na - CMC concentration in toothpaste extract of siwak wood ( Salvadora persica ) and red betel leaf extract ( Piper crocatum ) had no effect on antibacterial activity in Streptococcus mutans bacteria
