Abstract

Black rice (Oryza sativa L. indica) contains phenolic compounds such as anthocyanin, cyanidin-3-O-β-D-glucoside and peonidin-3-O-β-D-glucoside. The purpose of this research was to know the total phenolic content and its potential as sunscreen. The SPF value of each concentration of black rice ethanolic extract was determinated with UV-Vis Spectrophotometry method at 290-320 nm. The total phenolic content was determined by the Folin Ciocalteu (FC) reagent. The assay was done by UV-Vis Spectrophotometry method. The Total Phenolic Content (TPC) of 500 ppm of black rice ethanolic extract was 247.56 mgGAE/g. This TPC was the highest among other concentration extract. The SPF value of the extract was 12.99 which is categorised as maximum protection criteria. The results showed that there is a correlation between the total phenolic content in the extract black rice and SPF value.
