Abstract

This aim of the research was to improve students’ speaking competence through Situational Picture Card at the VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kalibagor in academic year 2010/2011. This research was done at SMP Negeri 2 Kalibagor with 27 students of class VIIIB as the subject of the research. The writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as a method of the research. The perform research, the writer worked collaboratively with the English teacher. The CAR was done based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart’s design. The writer took two cycles with two actions in each cycle. The data were collected through the observation, questionnaire, documentation, field note and speaking test (pre test and post test). The writer employed qualitative and quantitative as the technique for analyzing data. The qualitative data were analyzed based on the observation result of students’ speaking activities in the class, a questionnaire while quantitative data were analyzed by using speaking test. The data analysis showed that the use of situational picture card could improve the students speaking competence. The mean of students’ speaking competence was as follows; the pre test showed 37,11%; the post test of cycle one showed 46,44% and cycle two showed 62,92%. Therefore, the improvement of mean was 69,54%. It was also supported by observation and questionnaire result. The data observation showed that the average of the students’ improvement in speaking activity in cycle one at 25,14% (table 3) and the cycle two at 69,54%. Then the improvement from cycle one to cycle two was 44,4%. The data from the questionnaire which consisted of 15 questions showed that the students gave positive responses to the implementation of situational picture card. As it shown from the average percentages of all questions that chose “agree” (related to the implementation of situational picture card) was 83,91%. In conclusion, the research had been called success.
