Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe strategies in learning vocabulary that were most frequently used by eleventh grade students of SMK N 1 Purwokerto in academic year 2015/2016. The data was taken in May 2016 at SMK N 1 Purwokerto. This study used descriptive survey study. In collecting data the researcher used a questionnaire as an instrument which consisted 25 item. Random sampling was used to get the sample. The total number of samples was 103 respondents. The researcher analyzed the data by using percentage to decide the strategies in learning vocabulary most frequently used by the respondents. The result of the research finding were: (1) determination strategies (70%), (2) social strategies (65.08%), (3) memory strategies (57.35%), (4) cognitive strategies (57.90%), and (5) metacognitive strategies (52.73%). The score result indicated that the use of determination strategies was the most frequently used in this research. It consisted of using bilingual or monolingual dictionary (83.10%), analyzing any available picture or gesture (72.81%), guessing the word from textual context (71.45%), analyzing part of speech (62.71%), and analyzing affixes and roots (59.80%). From those sub-strategies, it could be concluded that most students used bilingual or monolingual dictionary to help them translate the words.
